Splinter Meeting on the definition of Earth Analogues

SMW1.3
Earth Analogues workshop
Convener
: F. Gómez
Location: Mars Room
Date: Tuesday, 25 September 2012, 09:00–12:30

The LF1 session of the EPSC2012 will be extended with a splinter meeting about Earth Analogues. The main idea of the splinter meeting is the generation of an output as a report about Earth Analogues: its definition, what is an Earth Analogue?, and a catalogue about field campaigns on Earth analogues. The idea is to provide the Europlanet RI EC Project with a complete document about those extreme environments which can be considered as Earth Analgoues in order to provide it to the general scientific community.

Any interested scientist working on the field who would like to present a 10 minutes talk before the general discussion should please send an email to Felipe Gómez. During the LF 1 session an agenda for the splinter meeting will be announced.

Science on Film – Film screening and discussion

Location: Press Conference Room
Date: Wednesday, 26 September 2012, 13:00–14:30

Science is the oldest theme of films. It is through visual media (TV, film, internet) that most people know about science what they know. Over the past century, the way science has been brought has seen changes, but perhaps not as much as one might think.

During this special lunch session the film "Between Mars and Svalbard" will be screened (52 minutes). The film was produced by Lightcurve Films for portuguese national TV and broadcast in April this year. It high lights a group of scientist from Portugal who analyse polygonal terrains on Mars and make a comparison to similar terrains found on Earth. In the film, the emphasis is on the people behind the science.

After the screening, a discussion will follow on the topic of the representation of science in the visual media. Discussion themes will include:

  • Do you, being a scientist, feel it is adequate?
  • If you participated in the making of a film, what are your experiences?
  • If you feel things should be done differently, how would you like to see things changed?

Free drinks will be offered.

Technology Foresight Workshops

Monday, 18:15–19:45: Planetary in situ measurements
Tuesday, 18:15–19:45: Advances in Planetary Mapping, Remote Sensing and Data Mining

The MT1 and MT4 sessions of the EPSC2012 will be extended with a splinter workshop, in which we try to draw together the collective wisdom of the community about the technology likely to be needed in the field in future years, so as to identify where development  will need to take place. We will generate roadmaps for the next few years.

Any interested scientist working on the field who would like to present a 10 minutes talk before the general discussion should please send an email to Manuel Grande and the session conveners.
